about

Introduction to “inhuman music”.

I produced these pieces starting back in 2002, during an intense period of work in sound design. They may be considered an alternative and peculiar line of my work.
In other productions, I made use of a vast array of means: digital, analog and (natural) acoustic processing, musical outboard equipment, tape recorders, rich sound sources and live instrumental parts, along with symbolic and/or conceptual structures. Instead, in this small collection of works - which I dubbed “inhuman music” - none of these inputs is to be found. These works are completely and solely based on digital sound manipulation.
For the final composition, a minimal input source (i.e. leftovers from editing) was isolated, manipulated, dissected, cloned, multiplied and diluted. In brief, it was extracted from its original context becoming something entirely other: a new form in an alien environment.
The minimal sound material was submitted to extensive digital manipulation in a formalistic fashion, with an almost clinical, laboratory-like frame of mind.
Any resulting aesthetic suggestion is purely incidental…and perhaps unavoidable. The same is to be said for any psychological effect: this largely depends on the perception and processing of the listener. Personally, I perceive an expressionist imprint in these pieces.
Credit must be given to my friend Denis Tomasini, who, in a certain way, is the co-author of these pieces, as he provided the vocoderised “mutant gene” phrase.

The pieces were selected in a dialectic relationship: tense / hypnotic, ominous / playful.
